FRED DARROCH, 4/10/1937-8/16/2019

Mr. Frederick Thomas “Fred” Darroch, 81, of Lillington, died peacefully on Thursday, August 16, 2018 surrounded by his family at WakeMed Cary Hospital.

Fred was born April 10, 1937 in Erwin to the late Andrew Kershaw and Maggie Colville Darroch. Fred faithfully served his country, his church, family and friends.

His career included seven years in the US Army where he received the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged.

After leaving the military his career continued with the Civil Service until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure with Civil Service, Fred received several awards. His highest honor was receiving the Outstanding Suggestion Award which was presented at the Pentagon in 1982. This award saved the government almost $3 million in the first year. He was honored to be commissioned an Honorary Colonel by Gen. Gary Luck in 1992. Additionally, the Department of the Army bestowed to him a Superior Civilian Service Award in 1991.

Fred served on the Lillington Town Board and for 30 years was honored to serve as treasurer of Lillington United Methodist Church.

He and Millie liked to travel across the US, visiting several states, with one of their favorite places to visit being Ft. Jackson where they began their life journey together.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at 3 pm in Lillington United Methodist Church with Rev. Laura Beth Casey and Dr. Elton Hendricks presiding. The burial followed at Westview Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Clifford Darroch and Raeford Darroch.

Fred is survived by his wife of 61 years, Millie Darroch; daughters, Lounette Darroch Black (William) of Fuquay-Varina and Denise Darroch Williford of Apex; five grandchildren, Will Black (Sarah), Austin Black, Kathleen Black, Morgan Williford and Adam Williford; a great-grandson, Henry Black; two sisters, Lucille Darroch Johnson of Garner and Elois Darroch Farrer (Joe) of Pflugerville, TX; a brother, Kenneth Darroch (Kay) of Lillington; his 100 year-old Aunt Ruby Colville Stewart of Erwin; and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends prior to the service on Sunday from 1 to 3 pm at the church.

Flowers are welcomed, however, memorials may be made to Lillington UMC 1201 S Main St, Lillington, NC 27546 or Union United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2212 Nursery Rd, Lillington, NC 27546.

The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the physicians, the nurses and the palliative care team at WakeMed Cary Hospital for their compassionate, professional care. In Fred’s words, “They left no stone unturned.”
