Betty A McDonald (Clark) - Class Of 1949

FAYETTEVILLE - Local designer Betty Ann Clark McDonald (AC Class of 1949) died peacefully Wednesday, July 1, 2015.

She was born on Fort Bragg on Oct. 21, 1932, to Lt. Colonel Leroy Keith Clark Sr. and Fannie Mae McFarland Clark.

She started her design profession as a designer for Sears Home Fashion Department. After 10 years, she left to pursue her vision of a more complex and personalized form of design for her clients.

She started her own interior design firm called Intra-Design in 1978. Her business was located in the Historic Haymont District. She operated this business for 30 years before retiring. There, she enjoyed designing home interiors, offices, hospitals, banks, hotels and other professional building types. She especially enjoyed the opportunity to work with a local dentist in the design of his new office from the foundation up to the finished interior. On request she would design furniture for her clients. She also was responsible for decorating numerous homes for special occasions, such as for Christmas and weddings.

One of her most interesting pieces of work was the furnishing of a Frank Lloyd Wright-style of house in Southern Pines for the prince of Malaysia and his wife. This work was featured in the local newspaper, as were many of her other works. She was an associate member of the American Society of Interior Designers.

She also had another business called Image Maker. She would design clothes for clients and herself, and had the opportunity to showcase some of her work to other New York fashion designers.

Betty was an avid gardener. She was associated with the North Carolina Federation of Garden Clubs. She served as the president of the Fayetteville Garden Council. Through her studies and love of garden clubs, she became the youngest master judge in North Carolina. As a master judge, she enjoyed judging many flower shows in both North and South Carolina. Not only was she a flower show judge, she also was a guest speaker for many garden club functions, and taught the art of flower arrangement.

She loved art, was active in the local art councils and was a painter who loved to use mixed media to create her art.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joseph Monroe McDonald.

She is survived by her two children, a son, Dan McDonald (Pam) and a daughter, Betsy McDonald Miller (Doug); and four grandchildren, Nicole Miller, Katie Miller, Sarah McDonald Wells (Rick) and Daniel Seth McDonald. She also is survived by a brother, Keith Clark Jr. (Class of 1968); and her cat, Charlie.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be given to the Cape Fear Botanical Garden, P.O. Box 53485, Fayetteville, NC 28305.
